MELBOURNE/ Australian authorities have warned that some people on Working Holiday and Visitor visas are lodging Protection Visa (Subclass 866) applications despite not being eligible, in an attempt to extend their stay.

The Department of Home Affairs said providing false or misleading information in a protection visa application is a serious offence and undermines Australia’s refugee protection system.

Applicants found making fraudulent claims may face visa cancellation, substantial fines, long-term bans from re-entering Australia, and difficulties obtaining visas for other countries. In serious cases, penalties can include up to 10 years’ imprisonment.

The department has urged visa holders to seek accurate information about Protection Visa eligibility through official government sources before applying.
