The Shepparton Nations Cup, established in January 2024, began with 10 nations and has rapidly grown into one of the most anticipated multicultural football festivals in the Goulburn Valley. Supported by the Greater Shepparton City Council and numerous local businesses, the tournament has become a beacon of cultural harmony, giving multicultural communities a reason to smile, connect, and celebrate their heritage through the universal language of football.

From the very beginning, Team Nepal has been an integral part of this journey. Under the leadership of Bishal Kunwar, one of the earliest Nepali migrants to settle in Shepparton in 2012, Nepal’s participation has grown from a small community effort into a symbol of unity, pride, and representation. Bishal’s dedication has inspired countless young Nepalis and helped establish a strong football culture within the local community.

In 2025, Nepal reached the grand final in a thrilling match against Afghanistan. Thousands of supporters—waving Nepali flags, wearing national colours, and singing together—filled McEwen Reserve in one of the most emotional sporting moments for the Nepali diaspora in regional Victoria. Although Nepal narrowly missed the title, the match became a defining moment of pride, resilience, and togetherness.

This year, the Shepparton Nations Cup returns from 8 January to 25 January at McEwen Reserve, promising two weeks of world‑class football and multicultural celebration. The opening match between Iraq and Türkiye on 8 January at 8:00 pm is expected to set the tone for a spectacular tournament.

Team Nepal enters the 2026 competition with one of its strongest squads yet. The team has welcomed several highly experienced players with backgrounds in the Nepal national team, including Sagar Thapa, Aashish Lama, Suman Lama, Tej Tamang, Rajan Gurung, and others. Their presence brings professionalism, leadership, and high‑level skill to the squad. Alongside them, talented local Nepali players from Shepparton and surrounding areas complete the team—creating a powerful blend of international experience and homegrown passion.

This year’s participation is especially meaningful because it reflects the evolving journey of the Nepali community in Shepparton. Looking ahead, the responsibility for Nepal’s participation in future tournaments will be taken on by Youthify Shepparton, under the leadership of Sundar Karki. This transition marks an exciting new chapter, ensuring that young Nepali Australians continue to lead, organise, and represent their community with pride. Youthify’s involvement promises to bring fresh energy, youth leadership, and long‑term sustainability to Nepal’s presence in the Nations Cup.

For many Nepalis living in Shepparton, the Goulburn Valley, and even Melbourne, life often revolves around long work hours, family responsibilities, and the challenges of settling into a new country.
